How to Make a Ring Dish

9/15/15

I have a bad habit of taking my rings off a lot to do things like wash dishes, weed the garden, paint, sand furniture, etc.  I’m always worried that I am going to set them somewhere and not be able to find them.  So I made these cute ring dishes to place them in while I’m working.

These are not that difficult to make.  Here is what you’ll need:

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Cotton balls and cutips
  • Little dishes (I got mine from World Market)
  • Oil based Sharpie Markers (I bought extra fine)

First I highly recommend practicing what you are going to write before you start.  This will also give you a better feel of the pens (be sure to follow the directions on the pen on how to get the ink flowing).

Now using your cotton balls, use the rubbing alcohol to clean the dishes.  After cleaning, do your best to not touch the area you will be writing on.  Then go for it!  The first dish I did was super easy with our cursive names.  But then for some reason, I had the hardest time with the date on the one with just our initials.  If you mess up, remember that you can use rubbing alcohol on a cutip to erase and redo it!  I probably redid the date on ours ten times!  Once I even put the wrong year haha! Once you are done decorating the dishes, let them dry for 24 hours.

Next place your dishes on a cookie sheet on place them in the oven.

Set the oven to 325 degrees, and let the dishes bake in the oven for 90 minutes.  I also recommend letting them cool in the oven.  (Quick note–the red heart did darken a little bit after baking) And after that, you are done!  Voila!

I decided not to add any clear protective spray on mine since I will not be handling them that much.  I recommend hand washing these and not putting them in the dishwasher.

These are so cute! I always leave my rings around the house too so I might have to try this one out!

Jess, these are so cute! I definitely need to make my mom and sisters one of these too because we’re always leaving our rings in the window sill to help each other with the dishes. Pinning now and will share on FB later this week too. Super adorable! Hugs, Coco

I am writing this from my hotel outside of Paris, France, getting ready to travel to a chateau tomorrow where my son will be married on Saturday. This would be such a perfect little gift to tuck in with their Christmas package! Have you used any of the metallic markers for these? It looks like you have a gold one in the one picture and I am wondering if they would also work just as well. Thank you so much for coming by and sharing at Celebrate it Sunday! I hope to see you again this week!

Hi Chloe! I have not yet tried Metallic markers on these. The gold one above did have a little shimmer to it. Just keep in mind that the color may change a bit once you bake it. Thanks for stopping by!

I love this and I think even I could do it. But my handwriting is HORRIBLE! LOL

You should still do it! Try the initials one…less handwriting 😉

Hi Katie! I bought mine off of Amazon using the link above in “what you’ll need.” They also have them at craft stores but they are a little bit more expensive…

Hi! I got my set from a local jeweler in Huntsville, AL. You know what is funny? I believe they called the flat bottom a shank? lol! Thanks for stopping by 🙂

I am no fan of old horse face as a Arsenal fan but I can see the sense in Arsene signing him. He would be shtor-term but if he is fit then there would be little risk.

Is the dish ceramic or glass and have you tried both?

I find it interesting that you#r8217;&e more adept with your phone that with your computer. It’s nothing bad but it emphasizes the importance of mobile devices and how prevalent they are in everyday life. And it’s great that you’re trying to get more comfortable with technology. As with anything, the more you use tech, the more comfortable you’ll be with it.
