Not Your Average Book Club

9/2/13

(Affiliate links are included within the post)

The girls finally had our first book club at my house this past Tuesday.  Starting a book club has been on my to-do list for a while now, and it was nice that it finally happened.  I hosted for the first club, and my book of choice was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  I picked this particular book because I was told it was a must read of 2012, and they are also making a movie about it!  For this book, I chose to do audiobook vice reading it since I would be traveling to Nashville.  This means that I was in the car for 19 hours over the span of a little over a week…eeek!!

Since I was hosting, I decided that I would make some adult punch and some of my favorite snacks to share.

Please pardon the photo quality, there were taken with my iPhone : )  I will hopefully be upgrading soon though!

Here’s what I made:

Champagne Punch
adapted from cooks.com

1 (12 oz) can frozen fruit punch concentrate
1 (12 oz) bag frozen strawberries
3 cups water
1 cup orange juice
2-3 tbsp lemon juice
1 (2-liter) of ginger ale
1 bottle champagne

Mix all together in a punch bowl, slowly stir and add ice.  Voila!!

Baked Brie Bites
Recipe from the Plain Chicken

Swiss and Ham Sandwiches
I’ve seen a lot of versions of this on Pinterest, but this is what I do:

2 packages of sweet Hawaiian rolls (the small dinner roll looking ones)
About 6 slices of decently sliced Virginia Ham
6 slices Scheese
1/2 stick of real butter, melted
1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder
1/2 teaspoon poppy seeds

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  Spray a 9×13 pan with cooking spray.  Slice the rolls into two sections so that there is a bottom and a top.  Place the ham and cheese across the bottom half of the rolls and add the top back on.  Melt the butter and add the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and poppy seeds.  Use a brush to spread the sauce all of the rolls. Bake about 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and serve!

Now to the book club part!  So I’ve only been to one other book club, and I know that all book clubs are different.  I figured we would figure out what direction we would take after our first one.  First I wrote up some discussion questions. Just kidding!  I am not that deep!  I googled some discussion questions and here is what I came up with.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn Discussion Questions
Questions taken from Tosa Book Club and Lit Lovers

Did you suspect Nick’s big secret? Were you
surprised—shocked—by it? Or did you have an inkling?

How do you think the “Amazing Amy” books affected Amy’s own
upbringing and ultimate personality as an adult?

What was Go’s character’s purpose in the book?
Amy and Nick lie. When did you begin to suspect that the two
were lying to one another…and to you, the reader? Why do they lie…what do
they gain by it?
Who was the victim, if any, in this book?
Was Amy justified in killing Desi? Do you think Desi would
have let her go if she wanted to leave?
How would you describe the couple’s marriage? What does it
look like from the outside…and what does it look like from the inside?
What are Amy’s treasure hunts all about? Why does she
initiate them for Nick?
Did you empathize or relate to any of the characters (Amy,
Nick, Rand, Marybeth, Go, Boney, Desi)? If so, which characters and why?
Did you ever believe that Nick had killed Amy or did you
always think he was innocent? When did you start to think he may have done it?
When did you figure out that Amy was framing Nick?
What is Amy’s mental illness, if any? Do you think her
mental state is innate (she was born with it) or do you think it developed out
of her environment? What contributed to her personality traits?
Did you find the ending of the book satisfying? Why or Why
not?
Do you think Amy would have committed suicide as she
originally planned? Why did she come back to Nick?
Movie time: who would you like to see play what part?
When we started, I had no idea how long we would actually talk about the book.  About half of the people who showed up had finished reading the book.  Surprisingly, we ended up talking about the book longer than expected.  At the end it was neat to talk about who we thought would be good in the movie.  I know every month will be different, but it is a nice excuse to get everyone together : )
We will be holding our book club once a month, and rotating who hosts.  Whoever is hosting next will be picking out the next book, so that will give us a nice genre of books.  I’m looking forward to next month.
If you want to follow along with our book club, be sure to check out our book club picks.  Need help starting your book club?  Check out my tips for starting one!
Thanks for stopping by!

Hi I'm Jess, and I call the Rocket City (Huntsville, AL) home! While I'm not doing my 8-5, you can find me hanging out with my lab mix Riley or starting a craft or project (sometimes multiple) around the house. I'm always doing my best to stay active and try new things. Hopefully you will stick around for the ride!
