State Outline String Art

1/24/15

I’ve seen a couple of these football inspired string arts, and I knew I had to make one.

Here are the supplies you’ll need:

DIY State Outline String Art Supplies | Sweet Tea in the South

~Piece of wood (I got a pre-made one at Hobby Lobby)
~Wire Nails
~Hammer
~Crochet Thread
~Glue
~Stain or paint

First I stained my piece of wood with some stain I already had on hand.  Then I printed out a copy of the state of Alabama and cut it out.  This site has outlines of all of the states for free! The size provided fit perfectly on my wood cutout.

Next I taped the state onto my wood and traced around the edge.

Now get comfy with your hammer–it is time to nail all around the edges.  Don’t forget to cut out a heart, trace, and nail around it if you want to show some love for a particular city : )  Do your best to make sure the nails are nailed in straight.  It can be very difficult when you are nailing nails so close together.  At one point I looked down, and I had a whole section of leaning nails!

I ended up having to redo my heart a few times to get it just how I liked it.  Which state you chose to do will determine where the best place to start your string at.   I started at the bottom left panhandle of Alabama.  I tied on the string, glued it on with some Krazy Glue, and cut the extra thread.
Then start weaving your thread in whatever pattern you want…even, random, repeating, etc.
Why yes, I was a big gray blob that day : )
Then I added some orange around the heart for an accent.
And voila!

Hi I'm Jess, and I call the Rocket City (Huntsville, AL) home! While I'm not doing my 8-5, you can find me hanging out with my lab mix Riley or starting a craft or project (sometimes multiple) around the house. I'm always doing my best to stay active and try new things. Hopefully you will stick around for the ride!
